Best accounting software for small businesses in India (2026)
TallyPrime, Zoho Books, BUSY, Vyapar, Marg and HostBooks compared for Indian SMEs: GST features, prices, who each suits, and when to add automation on top.
By DotZero Research
Quick answer. TallyPrime is the safe default for almost every Indian small business because your CA already works in it. Zoho Books is the best cloud option, free under ₹25 lakh revenue. BUSY wins for traders with inventory, Marg for pharma and FMCG distribution, Vyapar for micro businesses on a phone, and HostBooks for bundled GST and TDS filing.
Prices are list prices as of October 2026, excluding GST.
Comparison table
| Software | Deployment | Indicative price | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TallyPrime | Desktop, Tally on cloud | Silver ₹22,500, Gold ₹67,500 one-time; TSS ₹4,500 to ₹13,500 per year; rental from ₹750 per month | Speed, CA familiarity, GST reports, audit trail, every integration | Dated interface, weak bank feeds, no document capture |
| Zoho Books | Cloud | Free under ₹25 L revenue; ₹749 to ₹7,999 per month | Bank feeds, invoicing, apps, multi-user, mobile | Your CA may still want Tally exports |
| BUSY | Desktop | Perpetual ₹11,000 to ₹22,000; subscription ₹5,000 to ₹50,000 per year | Inventory, godowns, schemes, GST | Smaller ecosystem than Tally |
| Vyapar | Mobile, desktop | About ₹3,399 per year (desktop) | Billing, simple books, WhatsApp invoices | Not for complex books or audits |
| Marg ERP | Desktop | ₹8,100 to ₹25,200 one-time | Pharma batches, expiry, FMCG schemes | Vertical-specific |
| HostBooks | Cloud | About ₹5,499 per year bundle | Books plus GST and TDS filing in one | Thinner feature set than Zoho |
How to choose
- Ask your CA first. If they work in Tally, every other choice adds export friction at month-end. Most firms will quietly convert your Zoho data into Tally anyway.
- Count your transactions. Below about 100 invoices a month, almost anything works, including Vyapar. Above 300, you need bank feeds or automated statement import, which pushes you to Zoho or Tally plus an automation layer.
- Check your sector. Pharma and FMCG distributors should look at Marg before anything else; multi-godown traders at BUSY.
- Check the 2026 compliance list. GSTR-2B and IMS reconciliation, e-invoicing if you cross ₹5 crore (30-day reporting window above ₹10 crore), TDS returns under the renumbered 2026 forms. Ask the vendor to show each one.
Where every tool stops
None of these reconcile GSTR-2B against your purchase register with supplier follow-up, chase your team for missing bills, or draft replies to notices. That gap is the same for Tally and Zoho users. Small businesses cover it with their CA’s time; growing ones add a reconciliation tool or an automation layer. We explained the mechanics in GSTR-2B reconciliation in 2026 and what automation on top of Tally or Zoho looks like on the accounting automation page.
