Best AI tools for accounting and GST compliance in India (2026)

The AI tools that save Indian accountants and CA firms real time in 2026: extraction, 2B reconciliation, notice drafting and research assistants, with prices and limits.

By DotZero Research

Quick answer. For small firms, Vyapar TaxOne is the cheapest way to get AI extraction of bank statements and invoices into Tally. For enterprises, ClearTax, Cygnet and IRIS handle notices and litigation at volume. For research and drafting, ICAI’s CA GPT and general assistants are useful but must not touch filing. For firms above about 100 clients, custom AI automation that reconciles GSTR-2B and IMS, chases suppliers and clients, and drafts notice replies on your own templates is where the hours actually come back.

What “AI for accounting” means in practice

Four jobs, in order of how much time they save:

  1. Extraction. Reading bank statements, invoices and bills, including photos from WhatsApp, into structured vouchers with GSTIN validation and ledger assignment.
  2. Matching. GSTR-2B and IMS against the purchase register, with reasons for every mismatch and proposed accept/reject/pending actions.
  3. Chasing. Reminders to suppliers who have not filed and clients who have not sent documents, escalating automatically.
  4. Drafting. Summaries of notices (ASMT-10, DRC-01A, 143(1)(a), 139(9)) and first-draft replies from firm templates.

Most products do one of these. Very few do all four together, which is why the integration is often the real product.

The tools in detail

Vyapar TaxOne

Upload a bank PDF or a batch of invoice scans, get Tally vouchers, and collect documents over WhatsApp. About ₹10,000 a year makes it the obvious first step for a small practice. Expect roughly 70% straight-through accuracy on messy scans on day one; the rest needs correction, and ledger rules are generic rather than client-specific.

ClearTax, Cygnet, IRIS

The enterprise tier. ClearTax’s notice tracker summarises notices with AI and tracks deadlines; Cygnet and IRIS are GSPs with litigation modules used by companies handling hundreds of notices a month. Priced and sold to corporates. CA firms use them on client licences.

ICAI CA GPT and general assistants

CA GPT is ICAI’s free research assistant for members, trained on the Institute’s material. General assistants are excellent at explaining a rule, summarising a notice or drafting a reply once you paste the facts. Two rules: never paste client-identifiable data into a consumer plan, and never let an assistant’s answer substitute for the section text.

Custom AI automation

When a firm crosses about 100 clients, the limiting factor is not extraction but the loop: extract, match, decide IMS actions, chase, prepare the safe-to-claim ITC, hand over for review. A custom system runs that loop with the firm’s own ledger rules, WhatsApp templates and review queue, pulls 2B through an authorised GSP, and is operated on a retainer so rule changes are absorbed. This is what we build at DotZero; the accounting demo shows the reconciliation and notice desk on sample data.

Questions to ask any vendor

  • Where is data hosted, and is there a no-training clause with the model provider?
  • What is the measured accuracy on our documents, and what happens to the uncertain fields?
  • How do you access GSTN: GSP, scraping, or asking for passwords? Only the first is acceptable.
  • What happened to your product on 22 September 2025 (GST 2.0) and 1 April 2026 (Income-tax Act 2025)? How fast did you ship?
  • Do you sign a data-processing agreement under the DPDP Act?

Frequently asked

Can AI file GST returns?
AI can prepare, reconcile and draft. Filing requires a GSTN-authorised channel (GSP) and, for income tax, an ERI-registered application or the portal itself, plus a human authorising it. No credible tool files without a review step.
How accurate is AI invoice extraction on Indian invoices?
Above 99% on clean digital PDFs; 95 to 98% on scans and photos after tuning for a client's suppliers. The remaining fields go to a review queue, so accuracy should be measured as review workload rather than a single number.
Is client data safe with AI tools?
Ask where data is hosted (Indian regions are available from every major cloud), whether the vendor has a no-training clause with the model provider, and whether they sign a data-processing agreement under the DPDP Act, 2023. If a vendor cannot answer all three, do not upload client data.
