Best software for CA offices in India (2026): practice, GST, ITR, TDS and automation tools compared

An honest comparison of the tools Indian CA firms actually run on in 2026, from Tally and CompuTax to Vyapar TaxOne and custom AI automation, with indicative prices and who each suits.

By DotZero Research

Quick answer. For books, TallyPrime remains the default and Zoho Books is the modern cloud alternative. For return preparation, CompuTax, Winman, Saral and Genius are the established desktops and KDK Spectrum is the cloud option. For the new category of automation, Vyapar TaxOne (the former Suvit) is the cheapest way to get bank statements into Tally, ClearTax serves enterprises, and firms with 100-plus clients increasingly commission custom AI automation for reconciliation, document chasing and notices.

Prices below are list prices or published ranges as of October 2026, excluding GST. Confirm with vendors; several negotiate.

How we compared

A CA office runs five kinds of software: the ledger (where client books live), return preparation (ITR, TDS, GST), compliance data access (GSTN, income-tax portal), practice operations (who owes what by when), and automation (the glue between all of the above). Most firms have the first two and nothing for the last two. We rated tools on fit for a 5 to 25 partner firm, total cost over three years, and how much manual work they remove.

The tools in detail

TallyPrime

Still the ledger of record for most Indian SMEs, which means most CA firms live inside it whether they like it or not. The XML and ODBC interfaces are what every automation vendor uses to post vouchers. Tally on cloud (rental, about ₹750 a month) is increasingly common for remote teams. Weakness: no native reconciliation with GSTR-2B beyond basic imports, no document collection, no practice views.

Zoho Books

The best cloud alternative for clients who want bank feeds, invoicing and multi-user access. Free below ₹25 lakh revenue, which makes it popular with startups. For firms, it matters mainly as an integration target; many clients will never leave Tally.

CompuTax, Winman, Saral, Genius

The desktop return-preparation suites. They differ in interface and pricing more than capability: all file ITR, TDS and GST returns through the official utilities and ERI channels. Winman is strong on audit reports and ITR; CompuTax is the broadest suite; Saral and Genius are the budget picks. None of them collect documents, reconcile 2B at scale or track notices across a hundred clients.

KDK Spectrum

A cloud return suite for multi-user firms at about ₹27,000 a year for five users. The right choice if partners and staff work from different offices. It has absorbed some users of ClearTax’s TaxCloud product, which was reported to shut in March 2026.

Vyapar TaxOne (formerly Suvit)

The breakout automation product for small firms: upload a bank PDF or invoice scans and get Tally vouchers, plus WhatsApp-based document collection, for about ₹10,000 a year. Accuracy on messy scans is the limitation, and ledger rules are generic. For a sole proprietor with 30 to 80 clients it is excellent value.

ClearTax

Enterprise GST, e-invoicing and TDS, with an AI notice tracker. Pricing is contact-sales and oriented to companies rather than practices. CA firms serving large clients may use it on the client’s licence.

Custom AI automation

Above roughly 100 clients, the limiting factors become GSTR-2B and IMS reconciliation (2 to 3 hours per client per month), document chasing, and notice handling. Off-the-shelf tools do each piece generically. A custom system does them with your ledger rules, your WhatsApp templates and your firm’s review workflow, and runs on a retainer. This is what we build at DotZero; see the accounting automation page and the live demo to judge whether it fits your firm.

Who should pick what

  • Sole proprietor, under 50 clients: Tally access plus Saral or Genius plus TaxOne. Under ₹25,000 a year all-in.
  • 5 to 10 partner firm, 100 to 400 clients: Tally plus CompuTax or Winman, KDK Spectrum if multi-office, and either TaxOne for bookkeeping or a custom reconciliation and chasing system.
  • Firm with enterprise clients: add ClearTax or Cygnet on the client’s licence; keep your own practice stack lean.

What changed in 2025 and 2026

GST 2.0 rate rationalisation (September 2025), hard-locked GSTR-3B liability, the three-year filing bar and the Income-tax Act 2025 with renumbered forms (Form 16 became Form 130) all forced software updates. When evaluating, ask vendors how quickly they shipped those changes. Our CA office automation playbook covers the workflows to automate first.

Frequently asked

What is the minimum software stack for a new CA office?
TallyPrime for client books (or access to clients' Tally), one return-preparation suite for ITR and TDS (CompuTax, Winman, Saral or Genius), the GST portal itself, and a WhatsApp Business number. Everything else is added as the client count grows.
Do CA firms need practice-management software?
Below about 50 clients, a shared spreadsheet and a disciplined calendar work. Above that, firms lose track of pending documents and due dates, which is when a practice board, automated reminders and a notice tracker pay for themselves.
Is custom automation worth it for a small firm?
Usually not below 50 to 80 clients; a ₹10,000-a-year tool like TaxOne covers the basics. Above that, the hours lost to reconciliation and document chasing are large enough that a tailored system pays back within months.
